This tasty summer treat will be on display at the Ann Arbor art fair. I will be on Liberty in front of the post office between 4th and 5th.
I want my original pieces of art to be more light fast. It’s not like the art is going to fade before your eyes or anything. I have just found that after a few years in a hot art tent all summer some of the colors can dim.
Some people solve this by putting all their art behind expensive UV glass. It’s a great way to go and if you have a few special pieces you keep in bright rooms I suggest it. I am looking for a lower budget option.
First I taped off area i didn’t want to get fixative on. I used Krylon Kamar Varnish as a base level.
Second I applied Golden Gloss Archival Varnish to the top. Some of them have one and some have two coats. The two coats w fixative are definitely shinier.
Third I applied Krylon Satin UV Archival to the sets in the bottom. Some of them have one and some have two coats. Again the two coats are shinier.
There are a few spots that took damage from the pro art tape I used. I did the shirt trick and everything but some of the color came off. I made notes on the board where this applies.
The spots that have just fixative and the spots with just UV sprays are rougher in texture for some reason. I do not know why. However, most people do not touch their art so we shall see how they fair when light is applied.
Now I will set these in a window that gets direct sun and see what happens. It is, of course going to rain for the next 5 days (written on Sunday. Being posted on Wednesday)
When I was at Dick Blick’s picking up paper I wasn’t able to find my usual over sized paper. So I grabbed the Blick’s brand.
I rather like it.
Feathering (how much the ink travels sideways in the paper)- almost none. Could put down several layers of ink before it started to spread. Even with red- awesome
Bleeding (how much the ink goes through the paper)- the ink was just starting to go through the paper when I finished my art. – decent.
Texture (does the paper have a texture that may impact the piece) – This paper is completely smooth. – no texture
Overall. I like this paper. I will continue to use it. I might not use it for single sided badges because I can see it on the back and I like my badges to either be two sided or not.

I had a bunch of fun painting these with acrylic paint. It’s a woodcut I got from Michael’s.
Side note: I couldn’t find these on the site anymore and nothing comes up under LGBT even though they have a sign up on the display behind the huge 4th of July stuff. however, they have signed the open for all pledge so. It’s probably just an oversite or the fact that if you wanna do 4th of July art you have to start now.
I plan to spray this with uv gloss paint before I hang it up cause sunshine fade.
Feathering is when the fibers of the paper are more absorbent and the ink travels along those fibers.
You can mitigate feathering by…
-making sure the ink dries faster.
– letting one ink dry completely before putting another ink directly next to it or overlapping it.
– accounting for the travel of the ink and lay down less ink closer to the edges.
Bleeding is when the ink goes through the paper. This is different from ghosting. Some papers will allow you to see the ink without it bleeding through. If I evaluate marker papers you’ll see ghosting. They almost seem more plastic than paper.
Copic marker says bleeding and ghosting are more features than negatives. If you manage to get a complete replica of the art when you flip the paper over you have saturated the paper and have the truest color that ink and paper will allow.
Heat/cold, humidity, & air flow can influence how much your ink feathers and bleeds.
